Several weeks ago, mobs of angry Facebook users organized themselves into “I’m Quitting and Leaving Facebook Campaigns”. They swore they’d leave and take a chunk of users with them.
Exactly how many people joined the mass exodus?
More than 34,000 people signed the pledge to quit. But there are no hard numbers as to whether they went through with it. (Let me know if you found updated data.) That said, Facebook has more than 450 million users. The amount of people pledged wouldn’t have made a dent in Facebook’s user population anyway.
New Facebook Uses and Features That Make me Stay
Facebook has made breaking up too hard to do. That’s why I’m staying put. I’m hooked on being connected to friends old and new. And being that I’m in the web content and digital media industry, it’s integrated into my job and life too much to cut and run. The privacy issues not withstanding, the new social media plug-in features are pretty fascinating. These are more reasons for me to stay.
Buy Movie Tickets on Facebook: Now you can buy movie tickets through Facebook. Not to every movie mind you - just to “Toy Story 3″. Disney launched an app that allows you to snap up the tickets without leaving the site at all. How convenient is that? More Disney movies will be available in the future.
Superbad Facebook Fan Page Analytics: If you manage a Facebook Fan page like I do, it’s important for you to know who’s coming to the Fan page and where and what posts or photos or other information that they shared with each other or comments that they liked. The new Facebook Insights dashboard will help you do this. This makes it easier to know your fans and target your marketing to them.
Like Button and Other Social Media Plugins: These are the features that caused the privacy firestorm in the first place. I’m still not completely sold but you have to admit it’s crafty and convenient. For example, that Like button shares what websites you gave the “thumbs up” to with the friends in your profile. It also adds it to your likes and interests in your profile.
Essentially the other social media plugins turn your website into a fan page allowing for people to comment, make recommendations and login easily to your site and vice-versa.
