First Words

The Sexy Geek It used to be that the words “geek” and “sexy” would never be caught in the same sentence.

Geeks were the ones who could hack into the NASA database, while playing Dungeons and Dragons in their mama’s basements where they lived.  The sexy ones were the people they literally drooled over.

Not anymore. (Such a ridiculous stereotype anyway :) .

There is a geek inside of all of us. If you started out on MySpace, have migrated your friends to Facebook, Tweet regularly, build WordPress themes, create Joomla modules, dream about Drupal, rock out to Rockband, strum on Guitar Hero, can name the main characters in “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” (pick a version), take photos with your IPhone, blog, podcast, send SMS texts or even remotely thought about going to a Con – you’re a geek.

And being a Geek is sexy.

The Sexy Geek Files – Finding the Sexy and Cool in the Geek Universe

I’ve always been a geek – though the sexy showed up later.  I loved “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” long before they got millennial makeovers. My comic book collection probably would have made millions if I hadn’t thrown the lot away when I was twelve. (Such pressure  to get rid of “useless” things when you have to move to a new house!)

I have been dabbling with the Internet since I found it with dial-up in the early nineties. But I also loved mojitos, artist listening parties, movie screenings, award shows,  little black dresses and Hollywood gossip. For a time, I made money writing about it all when I was on the traditional journalist side of things.

I decided to embrace my geeky side fully. And in doing so, I realized that there is a lot that’s sexy and entertaining in the geek universe.  Here I will tell some of those stories.

Sexy Geek Fest – aka BlogHer ’09

Not many men would argue that geeks aren’t sexy if they had attended BlogHer ’09 in Chicago last week. BlogHer is  the premiere online community for women who blog and the conference it produces every year is the mother of all conferences for said blogging women. Yes it’s a regular sexy geek show.

While I didn’t get to go, I helped send off two sexy geeks to the event: bloggers Lorraine Sanabria Robinson (aka Ask Wifey ) and Christine “the Chatterbox”  Crowder (aka My Life a Work in Progress). These women embraced their inner geeks by not only creating successful blogs for themselves, but an online network for women of diverse ethnicities that promotes the business and pleasure of blogging. It’s called the BlogRollers.

Denene Millner, Christie Crowder, Lorraine Sanabria Robinson and Jennifer Johnson enjoyed the Chicago night life during their trip to BlogHer '09.

Going to BlogHer 09 was not only important to Lorraine and Christie. They wanted to share the experience with others. They created the “Fourth Wheel” Contest, where blogging women competed to travel with them to the convention. Through the BlogHer 09 Carpool program, they rode in style via a Chevy Traverse donated by GM.

Guest blogger/editor in chief Denene Millner of My Brown Baby and Jennifer Johnson of Baby Makin(g) Machine won the coveted slots.

At their Blog Her or Bust Road Trip party at Blue Moon Pizza,  in Vinings Georgia, blogger supporters like Joan of All Trades, Enjoyceinglife, Mami2Mommy, and moi got to wish them well. Those who didn’t get to attend in person, submitted well-wishes through the online streaming service U-stream.(Yes they streamed this!)

Did You Hear the One About the Baby in the Bar?

Sexy geek/bloggers sometimes don’t make the most ethical journalists or scrupulous consumer reporters – so the mini-soap operas that came out of BlogHer would indicate.

One woman blogger threatened to trash a Crocs shoe rep on her blog for not giving her a pair of shoes when they ran out.

While mommy bloggers with infants in tow were turned away from an event Nikon was throwing because it was -  well being held at a bar. Uh come on who brings their babies to a bar to get their photos snapped? (Was I the only one who saw the movie “Sweet Home Alabama”?)

But hey I’m single with no kids so perhaps my perspective is clouded. Judge for yourselves.
